KINSHIP ORGANIZATION IN SOUTH-WEST 89
The Chm of the Spouse
As was mentioned above, an individual observes the same
tabu on the toternic objectof his or her spouse’s clan, as is
observed towards the names of tl1e parents~in-law. It is said,
too, that in offering food to the husband's totemic animal,
a woman addresses it with “gules " not “guan The tabus
observed by a people with reference to their own totem are not
recognized by their relatives by marriage unless these are staying
in the village, in which case their behaviour is regulated by the
general rule that a‘ “stranger â€ù respects, out of courtesy, the
restrictions on the totemic object of the clan occupying that
locality. There are, however, certain rules of behaviour imposed
upon a man when he is visiting his wife's village (or any
village of his wife's clan), and these suggest an interesting
combination of friendliness and antagonism. On the one hand,
it is generally recognized that he should not take with him his
bow and arrow, spear, musket, or any other weapon, for his
wife's village is ileo, that is " sacred " or “ tabu “ to him. As
Tota explained, that village is no longer hostile but friendly. On
the other hand a man does not go into the amel, or club-house,
of his wife's village. The amel is the centre of the social life of
the men of the village, and the exclusion of a man from it seems
to indicate a certain antagonism towards or aloofness from him.
This KINSHIP Svsrnms or Wim AND Laus
The people of Wien and Laus are now apparently practically
extinct, as are also those of Hurtes on the south coast and of
Tomman Island. Their social organization seems to have been
the same as that of Seniang and Wilemp, and such of their
kinship terms as have been collected show a close athnity with
those of their western neighbours. Only the primary meanings
of the terms have been recorded, however, and we know nothing
of their range or of the way in which they were extended to other
relatives.
