Kan is another Seniang word meaning " sacred â€ù or “ tabu". Thus the two grades and the grade title can all three be translated “Sacred Fire â€ù. Naamb Tilzo is doubtless an indigenous grade in Seniang, while Naamb Loh was probably adopted from the Nimangki series which existed in Hurtes when that district was still inhabited. The meaning of the word barang in the title Barangbie 1 The spelling ml!/zlilfl and mwslip is used indiï¬Åerently by Deacon, but since the latter is rather more frequent in the later notes it is used here as probably bung the more can-ect.—C.
