THE NIMANGKI SOCIETY 319
a sisal leaf which he has been holding in his hand. One of the
men, called by the title imimiiis mlmt m (probably one of those
who in the procession had Carried a conch), is now painted and
takes up his position beside the mbang up. The candidate presents
a pig to him while two other men blow alternating notes on the
conches. After this the temcs is pulled from out the mbang up
and planted in the mmi save ; the mlzang up is set ï¬Åre to and burnt
down. When all this has been done, the rites proceed as usual.
T2141 and the torch dance are performed at night and in the
rnoming one of the seniors, painted red all over in the manner
of a member of M bat Ru (though actually he belongs to a higher
grade himself), executes the “hawk dance ". After this come
the purchasing of the new hawk’s feather; the painting and
decoration of the candidate in the matanhal; the dances of the
trios to the accompaniment of iariar and mbat m on the gongs ;
and the slaying of the pig. The head of this pig is given to the
performer of the “ hawk dance ", and the candidate gives another
pig of mbong memls grade to his introducer in payment for the
macs.‘ He then goes up to where the tcmes mbat m stands in
the naai save, places his hand across it and receives the new
title Alungk.'

The entrance rites to Noulas are very similar to those of
M bat Ru, which it immediately precedes, and of Neliu/is. In
‘preparation the structure called numbul is set up inside the
lamll i.n the manner already described, the only distinctive
<.feature oi this structure being that the tomes arc crowned with
‘nbrivivw leaves. The carved yam is as usual laid on the ground
-inside the nmnbul and in addition a coco-nut frond is attached
to the enclosing cord.
When everything is ready prepared, aisumpndew is sounded ;
guests arrive on the following day; the introducer's assistant
dances with the carved yam in the way already rlescribcd—the
gong rhythms which are beaten on this occasion being iariar
followed by that called mbat m—and receives payment for it.
