before the mixture is drunk no one may leave the club-house.
Then, i.f one chief is visiting another, this guest approaches the
trough, goes down on all fours, puts his mouth to the liquid and
sucks it up. The moment he ï¬Ånishes all the assembly, led by the
chief who is acting as host, begins a slow, rhythmic, clapping of
hands, in honour of the chief who has been drinking. This may
continue for two or three minutes. Then the host goes up to
the trough and drinks in the same way; he is followed by all
the other men present, in order of their rank or importance.
It appears, however, that this ceremonious way of partaking of
kava is not always observed, for we are told that sometimes
small bowls made from coco-nuts are used as kava cups. Women,
and those men who have not entered the Nimangki, may not
drink kava at all.
_ Sourn AND EAST MALEKULA
Information about the Nimangki in other parts of Malekula
is very scanty. We have a list of grades recorded from Worvulu,
a village near Metanui on the south coast, which shows that
the society of this region was probably very similar to that of
Seniang. It runs as follows :—
