The ï¬Årst three of these Nalawzm grades are relatively
unimportant. Naamel Limlm is cntcrcd in childhood, and
Numbou Nemen and Nmnbnu Vanmasur are purely optionalr
The ï¬Årst obligatory rank taken by adults is Naainggol, and then
of necessity follow Nisamp and Nimbatin Namnel. The order
of entrance to these early Nalawan appears to be more rigid
than it is for the higher ones‘ For most men, therefore, Nimlmtin
Naamal will be the fourth in the series (counting Naamel Limbu
as the ï¬Årst), and on the occasion of his entry into this a man will
generally sili mba ai limbu, " cut the sacred yam.â€ù This rite
prepares him for that of " stoning the pig â€ù which he will perform
at this ï¬Åfth rise in rank. Once he has “ stoned the pig " he is
privileged to attend Nalawan ceremonies in other places and to
take part at them in the " stoning â€ù of certain ceremonial objects,
a rite which is a constant and characteristic feature of the
Nalau/an." In other words it may be said that only when a
man has " cut the sacred yam " and "stoned the pig" is he
regarded as being a full member of the Nalau/an society, free to
go and join in its ceremonies whorcvcr and whenever they are
held. In high Nalawan, however, the ceremonial stoning of
objects is replaced by shooting at them with a bow and arrow.
To join in this rite a man must himself have entered a grade in
which instead of " stoning â€ù the pig he shoots at it. This he
would generally do when entering a Nalawan of a status above
Nivi/at.
It will he noticed in the above list that the grade Nulawan
Nimlm/ilei is divided into six sub-grades. These are all known
as Nalau/an Nimbwiki, “ Nalau/an of the Gongs “, and are
