The Father's Sister (Awei)
Although the same term is used for father's sister and mother’s
brother’s Wife, the attitude towards, and the part played in the
life of the individual by these women are quite distinct. A man

being allowed to leave until she says that it is time for him to
return home. Together with the father, the father‘s sister has the
principal voice in deciding whom a man shall marry; but the
mother's brother may also have some control over his nephew's
marriage. <

ever he comes he brings coco-nuts, ï¬Åsh, yams, and other foods.
In the words of one informant : “ M mum constantly takes food
to the children's mother, yams, ï¬Åsh, coco-nuts; he does not
forget at any time." 1 As we have seen, the pigs paid by a man
to his wife‘s brother during the various stages of his children's
