are distinct from those of the west. The only one which seems
to recur throughout is Mweleam, appearing under the forms
M elmm and M iliam in the Maskelynes and Wonrulu and in
Senbarei respectively. Barrmg or Bamngbia is found everywhere
save in the Maskelynes, the Sulol word Pwemmg being merely
a dialectic variation of this‘ It is probable also that the Mweriv
of Senbarei, the M u/eliw of Vanbaut, and the Mwelip of Sulol
are the same as the N elm M welip or Tam M welip of SENIANG and
Worvulu. On the other hand there is a marked similarity between
the grades of East Malekula and West Arnbrym. It is recognized
by the people of Ambrym that the M angge society, as it is there
called, was introduced into their country from Malekula and
from a comparison of the grade names of Vanbaut, Senbarei,
Sulol, and Lonwolwol, it seems probable that the influence came
to Ambrym from the region of Port Sandwich rather than from
Senbarei, though at Sulol new grades appear to have grown
up locally. -
Very few details were obtained by Deacon about the N imangki
of this eastern region. At Senbarei he was told that each grade
has a variety of croton (neghegh) which is sacred to it, and which
‘ Na im .-= " the house " ; cf. Sehiang gfade Na arnel.
' Mal said to be used for the highest e iefs; cf. the Santa grade.
‘ These two grades, Na im and Mweleun, are both subdivided into two
parts.
‘ V21 and vii may perhaps be the same word in different dialects. According
to Ray (M.I.L., p. 332) Malekulan t> d and 1.
5 The exact position of these ranks in the series is not known, but they are
said to be one of high status.
‘ Pu/Brimg in Atchin Island, East Malekulzt, means " cave ". (Layard, p. 157.)
