most striking is the similarity between the words Nelzm and
Nalau/an, Neliam or Nilan, the names of a. single association
found in districts to the south, north, and south-east of the
region in which the Nelan flourished. The second fact which
is important is the seclusion of the candidates which takes place
in the Nelan of Lagalag, and in the Seniang Nalamm Vinbamp,
though the element of torture which characterizes the former
seems to be absent from the latter. Finally this view is supported
by Deacon's ovm statement : â€ù I am convinced,â€ù he writes,
“that the Nalawan is a fundamental institution in at least the
patrilineal area of the New Hebrides." 1
1 This was written before he had discovered the six-section system of
kinship organization in Ambryrn, which is based on a recognition equally of
patrihneal and matrilineal relatives. Deacon himself nowhere discusses the
relation of the Nelan and Nimmlgki 11,1 to the Nlldfllï¬Åfl. He Cflnï¬Åuefl himself
to the statement that they were quite distinct from the ordinary Nimaflgki,
and as shown above he regards the Nimmlgki Tlal as being closely similar to
the Tamnt: of the Banks Islands. In order to make the analysis of the dis-
tribution of the Nnhzwan complete it seemed desirable to intr0duce this discussion
concerning the probable relation of the Nelizn and Nimamgki Tlel to the Nalau/an.
