GLOSSARY OF NATIVE TERMS
The following list of Malekulan words does not pretend to be a
general dictionary, but rather a glossary of those native terms which
recur throughout the PRECEDING pages. They have been arranged
alphabetically according to the initial letter of the word-root, or what
appears to be the word-root, the preï¬Åxes %t/I-, ne-, ml, etc., of substantives
being printed in parentheses, as are also the preï¬Åxes i- and re- (signifying
the third person singular and plural of the present tense) of the verbs.
Thus, for example, (na)a1' (" the tree â€ù) is listed under the initial A
and (i)omj> (“ he throws ") under the initial 0. The great majority
of the words here given are in the dialect of Sinesip, spoken by the
people of Seniang district. Where this is not so, the letter in parentheses
placed after the word indicates the dialect to which it does belong:
(L) for Lambumbu ; (Lg.) for Lagalag ; (Lar.) for Laravat ; (M.) for
Mewun ; (B.N.) for Big Nambas ; and (Ue.) for Uerik.
aavu = “ grandparent " ; also used as a term of address when speaking
to an elderly man or Woman, and when invoking an ancestor in
prayers.
('na)agham'en (Lg.) : the rite of knocking out a woman's teeth.
(?Ld)fli : a generic term used for trees and ti.mber ; it is used as a. preï¬Åx
for objects made of wood (see below), and for the names of gong-
rhythms which are beaten on the wooden gongs.
(W111)!/n' im, also miim: tree-fern.
(na)ai ileoz sacred trees; that is, all those varieties of trees which are
believed to possess individual souls (nimwinin q.v.).
(na)a1l kombat: (I) an erection of branches of the nimbew tree which is
set up over a funeral bier; (2) an object used in connection with
the rites oi Nalawan Vanmesur.
(mi)ai lemilmd : a gong-rhythm which is particularly associated with the
ritual of Nimangki grades above Nimangki Nimu/ail.
(na)ai lendlend (L.): an instrument used to make one of the sacred
sounds associated with the Nimzmgki Tlel, by which women are
warned of the approach of the novices.
(na)a1Z limbu (also spelt mmi limb? and naai limbwu) : a generic name for
all varieties of croton; means literally “ the sacred tree â€ù.
(Wfl)Wi limbu memal: a red-leaved croton often used for decorative
purposes.
(nu):/ri limlm mweil mbongz a “ black croton “, identiï¬Åed as codiaum
variegatum. It is specially associated with the Nimangki grade
Nimew. Mweil mbong means literally“ the cycas mouth ".
(na)ai lislis : (I) a plant some part of which is commonly used for lashings;
(2) a ï¬Ållet made from this plant which is one of the regalia belonging
to Nimrmgki grades below Nevelvel.
(nu)ai malzmdr: the gong-rhythm which is beaten for a pig oi 'ima4>
status.
i (n0)ai mbalmbal (L.) : bamboos used during the incision _rites.
(flfl)Ei mbatruz the gong-rhythm associated with the N1/mangki grades
Nuulas and Mbatm.
