Buying food for the anthropologists and their work boys in exchange for salt. People of the Bomagai clan have brought vegetables and pandanus fruit (marita in Tok Pisin; komba in Tok Ples). Both red and yellow. Peter Vayda, Mar, in the shade of the central breadfruit tree (ayu in Tok Ples), life in Gunts yard (1963 March 10) / Papua New Guinea, Simbai Valley, Fungai clan territory, Gunts

Life in Gunts yard. Luluai Pfun and Bossboy Ngul leaning on the trunk of the central breadfruit (ayu) tree. On the bark in front of Ngul's forehead are carved some letters: NG???? KONO. I did not see this at the time - only seeing it on the enlarged slide! It must have been one of the work boys who had had some schooling at the Anglican school in Gai who did this. Luluai's badge. Men's tobacco pouch (yir kun in Tok Ples) worn over his left shoulder. Note the men's stance. The men's house is up-slope in the background. (1963 March 10) / Papua New Guinea, Simbai Valley, Fungai clan territory, Gunts

Life in Gunts yard. Luluai Pfun and the young man, Kloi, (visiting from Fogaikump) stand inside the Vaydas' verandah. Pfun wears his habitual hornbill beak necklace and has put on a cap (mamb' kun in Tok Ples). Kloi's face is decorated with red singsing powder and black (probably a mixture from ashes). He wears a wig made of black human hair with a strip of white (possibly possum fur). From his necklace of beads hangs a traditional chain woven from wild orchid fiber (yellow) and another fiber. Bilas. (Technical problem of blue spot at side of Kloi's face) (1963 March 10) / Papua New Guinea, Simbai Valley, Fungai clan territory, Gunts
